*A Note About Non-Church Related Fund-raisers!*

Candles, Cookies, Candy, Raffles, Gift Wrap, Gift cards, Skip-a-Kick-a-Read-a-Walk-a-Breath-a-thons..... We've all been there, the cornering in the narthex, those sweet upturned faces, 'will you please support my school, team, troop, tribe, whatever? Fund-raisers are an inevitable part of kids' life these days. And kids, thanks be to God, are a vibrant and growing part of our church's life. We love our kids. We're proud of them. We want to support them, if and when we can. We know that church is one of the few safe places available to them. So is it 'okay' for them to bring their fund-raisers to church? Absolutely! -we're family; it's all part of the deal. However, There's a right way and a wrong way to ask church folk to help with fund-raisers, and every so often, for our newer people and for a reminder, we'll be publishing this friendly guide to help all your fund-raisers out!
Right Way Wrong Way
Outside of the sanctuary In the sanctuary
After worship (or Family Night) Before worship or Sunday School
Asking politely, with explanation Sticking the form and a pen under our nose
Checking whether anyone else is fundraising, and coordinating efforts Being one of three or four kids all asking the same person to buy something
Thanking people even if they say no Acting sad or mad if they say no
We can be very proud that our kids almost always fall into the 'right way' category already; our problems with fundraising are few and far between.  We periodically review, reaffirm, and restate our church policy regarding non-church-related fundraising so that kids, parents, and church folks alike are on the same page and can be sensitive to each other's needs and wishes.

Stewardship understands that God has given us the task of talking care of all that He has created. It is to know that who we are and what we have belong to God. Stewardship lies in the heart of Christian living.

Thoughts on Children's Ministry

The first seven years of life constitute the period for laying the foundations of religion... This is the most important period in the whole of a person's life in determining his [sic] later religious attitudes.
