Outreach Mission
Ken and Lynn Cutway, Cindy Ball, Dawn Gabriel, Alice Mankie and Tracy
Munden Jingle Bells, Ghoulish howls, Turkeys on a tray. Whatever happened to a single holiday? Sorry about that attempt to write poetry. On a recent visit to Macy's I couldn't help noticing that they had a Halloween display, a Thanksgiving display and you guessed it, a Christmas display. Whatever happened to celebrating one holiday at a time. Is it commercialism or a lack of a spiritual identity? Thanksgiving and Christmas didn't start out as “sellebrations”. I don't know how Halloween fits in but I do know that Thanksgiving and Christmas mean a lot to us Christians. Christian outreach is about finding the spiritual meaning in “our” Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations. For us these are happy times to thank God for our blessings, share and celebrate the birth of our Savior and share our spiritual joy and material blessings. Please keep these thoughts in mind as we as a congregation, we commit to our outreach holiday efforts. Kudos to all of you for your terrific support for our Thanksgiving Dinner Outreach project. As you all know we are taking a little different approach this year and it seems to be working! If this were football I'd say we are ahead in the second quarter with an imposing opponent and a long half to play. We are working hard and if we are to win (feed twenty families for three holidays) we must keep our focus and push toward victory! Go team, GO! Depending on when you read this newsletter, November 15th is cake mix, frosting and boxed stuffing. November 23 we will shop for perishables and sort and deliver them on the 24th and 25th. KinCare, the ParentWISE program for intergenerational families is up and running at our church. Coordinator Julie Cawoski is very optimistic that this will become an important community benefit. Their third meeting will be Thursday, November 12th. If you wish additional information about this program you may call Julie at (724) 837-5410, extension 701, Renny at church or me at (724) 216-3846. There are flyers available on the table in the narthex. It's November and Thanksgiving may be still ahead of us but it's also time to tell you about our exciting Christmas outreach plans. There are a couple of new things that we hope will become First Christian traditions. Lieutenant Brian Salvation Army Lieutenant Brian has asked our congregation be Bell Ringer volunteers. Let's buddy up, form teams and get this done the First Christian way. Hmmm, I'm seeing some creative possibilities; let's have some fun with this! Would you like to put some children in your Christmas holiday? Well, we've got just what you need. This year we are adding a Children's Choir program called the First Annual Christmas Blessings Concert to our church holiday traditions. Bethany (Ball) Cirota and her colleague, Mia Evangelist will be directing their children's choir from the Maestro Minds School. The concert will benefit the Westmoreland County Food Bank. The suggested admission is five dollars and a non-perishable food item or paper product. Put Friday, December 11 at 7PM on your holiday calendar As in the past we are also planning to supply dinners and gifts for the ParentWISE kids and the Welcome Home Shelter. Alice Mankie will be again direct our gifting for “Threshold”, a facility for challenged adults. As usual we have a busy holiday season planned that I believe will be successful, joy filled and very rewarding. Christianity and growing old ain't for wimps! We can't avoid growing old and as Christians we can't avoid our outreach mission. It's a special time of the year when we get to share our Christian joy and spread our happy message. GOD BLESS YOU ALL! I'd like to thank you all for your continuing generosity and special thanks to our Outreach Team. Gotta love ya'll! Ken and Lynn Cutway - While Pastor’s Class attendance is not required for membership, it is strongly recommended for prospective and current members who wish to learn more about how we understand and live out our Christian faith. “We call ourselves Disciples”…come and explore with us what that means!
