Who We Are

STATEMENT of CALLING

"As members of the Christian Church, we confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and proclaim him Lord and Savior of the world.

In Christ's name and by his grace we accept our mission of witness and service to all people.

We rejoice in God, maker of heaven and earth, and in the covenant of love which binds us to God and to one another.

Through baptism into Christ we enter into newness of life and are made one with the whole people of God.

In the communion of the Holy Spirit we are joined together in discipleship and in obedience to Christ.

At the table of the Lord we celebrate with thanksgiving the saving acts and presence of Christ.

Within the universal church we receive the gift of ministry and the light of scripture.

In the bonds of Christian faith we yield ourselves to God that we may serve the One whose kingdom has no end.

Blessing, glory and honor be to God forever. Amen."

 Preamble to the Design for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 1968

A little over a century ago, a core group of Christian visionaries committed themselves to bringing Greensburg the simple, yet powerful, Disciples ideals of unity, witness, and service in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and our Savior.  Through the years, the names and faces have changed, but at the edge of the  21st century we remain committed to unity, witness, and service – in the name and by the grace of the Living One whose will we seek to know and carry out.

Our life and mission as a church express themselves through a fourfold charge:
  • Care – for one another, our community, and our world, through countless tangible and intangible ministries;
  • Cultivate – a healthy, resilient, responsible, and ever-growing understanding of our faith and its expression…now, and for generations to come;
  • Communicate – the saving love and grace of  Jesus Christ to a world that needs Him so desperately;
  • Celebrate – our dynamic relationship with the One who calls us, transforms us, directs us, empowers us, and in all ways makes all things new.
 Our members and friends are of all ages and stations, and we come from many different backgrounds and walks of life.   Doctors, contractors, executives, laborers, teachers, sales reps, homemakers, retired folks, students, folks between jobs…from babies to centenarians, we’ve got it all.  On any given Sunday morning, you might see Buicks, “Old Faithfuls”, minivans, pickup trucks, subcompacts and even a Harley or two in our parking lot.

“In essentials, unity; in opinions, liberty; in all things, love.”   This centuries-old ideal, embraced by our founders, means that we are not “cookie-cutter” Christians.  We differ openly in our politics, our individual interpretations of Scripture, our viewpoints on current events and issues, and our understandings of where we are in our individual faith journeys.  But this we have in common, and this is enough to unite us:  Jesus Christ is Lord… Lord of the world, Lord of us, Lord above and beyond all temporal concerns and matters of opinion.  Guided by that star, we look together, in faith and love, for the wisdom to know God’s will for us – as individuals and as a church – and for the power to carry it out.  We are a family, gathered around the Lord’s Table.

And there is always a place set for you.
