"As members of the Christian
Church, we confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and
proclaim him Lord and Savior of the world.
In Christ's name and by his grace we accept our mission of witness and service to all people. We rejoice in God, maker of heaven and earth, and in the covenant of love which binds us to God and to one another. Through baptism into Christ we enter into newness of life and are made one with the whole people of God. In the communion of the Holy Spirit we are joined together in discipleship and in obedience to Christ. At the table of the Lord we celebrate with thanksgiving the saving acts and presence of Christ. Within the universal church we receive the gift of ministry and the light of scripture. In the bonds of Christian faith we yield ourselves to God that we may serve the One whose kingdom has no end. Blessing, glory and honor be to God forever. Amen." Preamble to the Design for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 1968
A little over a century ago, a core group of Christian
visionaries committed themselves to bringing Greensburg the simple, yet powerful,
Disciples ideals of unity, witness, and service in the name of Jesus Christ,
our Lord and our Savior. Through the years, the names and faces have
changed, but at the edge of the 21st century we remain committed
to unity, witness, and service – in the name and by the grace of the Living
One whose will we seek to know and carry out.
Our life and mission as a church express themselves through a fourfold charge:
“In essentials, unity; in opinions, liberty; in all things, love.” This centuries-old ideal, embraced by our founders, means that we are not “cookie-cutter” Christians. We differ openly in our politics, our individual interpretations of Scripture, our viewpoints on current events and issues, and our understandings of where we are in our individual faith journeys. But this we have in common, and this is enough to unite us: Jesus Christ is Lord… Lord of the world, Lord of us, Lord above and beyond all temporal concerns and matters of opinion. Guided by that star, we look together, in faith and love, for the wisdom to know God’s will for us – as individuals and as a church – and for the power to carry it out. We are a family, gathered around the Lord’s Table. And there is always a place set for you.
